Summer Reading: Outer Space
We are so excited about our outer space theme! My kiddos are particularly interested in learning more about it, which will make it extra fun! We had quite a few of these books and found some at our local library! I love displaying our themed books on these shelves, I have a tutorial on how we made them here!
We made our favorite playdough recipe, galaxy style! I simply used black, purple, pink, and blue food coloring along with star confetti! To make it look like the galaxy, we took a little bit of each dough and mixed it together! That’s my favorite part of homemade dough, it looks beautiful even mixed!
Rocket Addition
Did you know that gel crayons, dry erase markers and magnatiles work on stainless steel appliances? It’s pretty fun! I wrote simple addition equations on our fridge and my five year old would solve them using magnatiles to build a rocketship!
Coffee Filter Planets
We used My Very First Space Book to help us cut out planets from coffee filters! Then, the kids used markers to color each planet and sprayed them with water. We let them dry and they turned out so cool!
Letter Sound Stars
I used a sharpie to draw uppercase letters on glow in the dark stars. I tossed them in a bin of dried black beans for an outer space sensory bin! My five year old will review letter sounds as she pulls out the stars and my four year old will work on spelling his name.
Outer Space Snack Mix
This is a super simple snack that goes along well with our theme! We will have this throughout the week while we spend time reading our space books. I threw together banana puffs (star-shaped), kix cereal, multigrain cheerios, and blueberries.
Roll a Star
I used the rest of the glow in the dark stars for a little counting activity! Using a large dice, they will roll a number and count the correct number of stars in the ‘night sky.’
Build a Rocket
I created this little play guide for magnatiles! I also included additional play ideas and prompts for caregivers to use. It is a simple and intentional way to encourage imaginations! You can grab the free printable here! You can also click on the image below.
Bible Verse Tracing
I am so excited to add a memory verse and tracing activity for this week! I wish I had done this for each week. I created four other tracing cards for bible versus in the preschool morning work binder here if you want more! I laminated this one and plan to use dry erase markers or gel crayons to work on writing and verse memorization! You can grab this free printable here, or click on the image below!
Invitation to Play Cart
I got this cutie IKEA cart(similar Amazon version) that I am super pumped about. While I enjoy pulling out new activities each day for the kids during our summer reading program, I also love having some independent play options they can access on their own! I added the last three activities that I shared to the cart and they will stay out all week for the kids to get creative with!
This is going to be a week packed with FUN! We hope you are all doing well this summer!
