Summer Reading: Watermelon
My middle guy is obsessed with watermelons so we have been anticipating this week! We decided to add to the watermelon theme with the fruit of the Spirit as well. It’s going to be a fun week!
Lit Loves
The Fruit of The Spirit (waiting for this to arrive but it is GORGEOUS!)
Activities
Watermelon-Scented Dough
As always, we used our favorite playdough recipe for this! I just added a pack of watermelon jello mix while cooking and it smells AMAZING. To make it look like a watermelon I added dried black beans into a rolled ball of red. Then, I covered it will green and rolled it until it was completely green. The kids are going to love this when they see it, I can’t wait!
Fine Motor Melon
For this activity I am going to set my kiddos up with half of a very small watermelon. They will scoop as much watermelon as they want and place in on the popsicle stick! I will cut or scoop and save whatever they don’t use!
When we are done with the first fine motor activity, we will flip them over! I know my kids will get a kick out of this. I will place (clean) golf tees barely into the rind and have them hammer them in. We will probably do this outside because it can get messy!
Watermelon Seed Math Pack
This free printable includes two watermelon seed math activities. The first activity is number tracing 1-10, and the second activity is doubles addition . I realize these are two very different levels but it is perfect for my four-year-old and almost six-year-old to both do! We used dried black beans and dry-erase markers for this but you can also use black playdough or black poms! You can grab the printable here!
Watermelon Sponge Painting
I cut sponges into triangles and small rectangles and set them up with these paints. The q-tip works great for the seeds and it is super cute! I taped the paper down to a cookie sheet to keep it in place and some-what clean.
Fruit of The Spirit Activity Pack
I am really looking forward to digging into the fruit of the Spirit this week! In this free printable, I included a Galatians 5:22 tracing, a color sort page, and mini verse cards for each fruit! You can grab the printable here!
Watermelon Sensory Bag
I threw clear hair gel and red food coloring into a gallon ziploc baggie. Once the color was mixed through, I added dried black beans! My one-year-old will enjoy squishing it around and my older kids will work on their letters! I taped the top closed to be safe and will tape it to the table when we play.
Watermelon Cup Color Sort
My mom found these fun cups at target for us! I decided to make a color activity for my one-year-old! I colored plain popsicle sticks (colored sticks here!) and the tops of four cups. I cut out a rectangle in each cup for the sticks to go through! I decided to stick with four colors to keep it simple!
Watermelon Popsicles
I found a yummy watermelon-cucumber juice from Trader Joe’s and tossed it into this cute popsicle mold! This will be a fun, refreshing treat this week!
Activity Cart
I am still loving this IKEA cart for the playroom! It has been fun to set up with activities and see which ones the kids gravitate towards more. I plan to use another one to organize our homeschool curriculum, more on that soon!
I know this summer has been really different and even hard for a lot of families. Through this season I am really thankful to be leaning into time with my kids an investing in their learning! Have a great week!
