Play Theme // Shapes
Our shape theme has been Emma's favorite one to date! I typically keep the theme activities and books out for about three weeks, take a week to slowly put it away and start a new theme the next week for a new month! I started doing this as an easy way to rotate the books and toys to keep our playroom simple. Emma plays more intentionally with less toys around and it makes for much less clean-up!
We had very few books about shapes so we checked most of these out at the library.
Shape Sort
I made these shape pages (nothing fancy) and taped them up. I covered them with a long piece of clear, sticky shelf liner and Emma sorted these foam shape pieces. You could also forget the shelf liner and use real stickers instead!
Find-The-Shape Toss
I cut out a few shapes in a three-fold poster board. I gave Emma a basket of balls and asked her to find each one by, "tossing" the ball into the correct shape hole.
Sensory Shape Book
While I don't expect Henry to learn his shapes right now, I wanted to include him in our theme! I used the same shape pages (seriously, nothing fancy) from the shape sort activity. I just added different textures to each page. I used feathers, pipe cleaners, pom pons, straws and felt! I make sure to stay with buddy while he plays in case he pulls something off to take a taste ;).
Dot Marker Shape Printable
Emma really enjoys playing with her dot markers so I created a shape printable for them! If you don't have dot markers, we've also used q-tips and paint as an easy alternative. You can grab the dot markers and the free printable below!
